A Sport for Everyone
Bowls is a sport often favoured by older people whose running days might be behind them, but who still enjoy competing. Some of our members have mobility issues but are still able to enjoy a game and compete at the highest level.
The green surrounds are easily accessible with enough space to accommodate wheelchairs and mobility scooters - although they can't go onto the green itself. Players need to either step across the ditch or go down a couple of steps to get onto the rinks; if you need help, shout, and someone will be more than happy to assist. If you're just coming to watch, there are chairs and benches all around the green, in shade and in the sun.
Bowls Mobility Aids
Walking aids are permitted, provided they have a protective ferrule (plate) on the foot/feet to prevent them from digging into the grass. If bending down to retrieve your bowls is likely to be a problem, there are pick-up tools available to make it easier, and your fellow bowler will be happy to help if they can. There are even bowling arms and bowl launchers that allow you to bowl from an upright position! Many bowls cases are on wheels, like small suitcases, making it easy to transport them.
When it comes to actually bowling, there are many sizes and weights of bowls, and different techniques you can use; coaches will help you find the one that works for you.
The most important thing is to enjoy yourself, to improve a little more every time you play, and to meet new people.
