The current building for Holy Trinity Buildwas dates from 1720 and replaced a medieval church. It was therefore our tricentenary (300th anniversary) in 2020 and we had lots of celebration and fundraising events planned, including bug hunting and flora & fauna talks and hunts in the churchyard (we found our slow-worms!); and our usual fundraising events such as our ever-popular jumble sales and the Buildwas Summer Fete competitions! Unfortunately, most of these had to be cancelled due to COVID19. See the 'Events' section of this website for details of any upcoming events.
A big thanks to everyone who has donated so far and helped out and / or attended one of our fundraising events! We have spent some of the money raised on some of the less expensive but urgent items e.g. the cutting of the yew trees lining the path leading to the church entrance; a new aisle carpet; and we've had the concrete path in the churchyard re-laid to allow better access for wheelchair and pushchair users.

We have worked in partnership with Caring for God's Acre to produce a wildflower meadow in our churchyard (as we have a number of rare butterfly and flower species, and also slow-worms, which are a protected species). This is allowing us to preserve the habitat for these rare species as well as providing a space in the village for local residents and visitors to walk and sit in quiet reflection. We've also installed a new bench, designed and constructed by the Build A Bench Project at Smallwoods, a local charity based at the Green Wood Centre in nearby Coalbrookdale.
We are delighted to announce that following our fundraising campaign, we have reached our £63,000 target for the restoration of our tower! This has been due to grants received from 12 grant providers, as well as local individuals and companies:
The Benefact Trust
The Ian M Foulerton Charitable Trust
TMS (Telford) Ltd
The Lichfield Diocese Bridgebuilder Trust
Shropshire Historic Churches Trust
The Lower Hall Charitable Trust
The Sabina Sutherland Charitable Trust
The Edward Cadbury Charitable Trust
Patrick Smitheman (Harwood Estate Agents, Broseley)
The Garfield Weston Foundation
Laslett's Charitites
The National Churches Trust
Historic England
Also, Historic England have given us an additional £18,000 for the repair of our vestry and porch roofs to be completed at the same time as our tower restoration, which will make our church completely watertight and draught proof and prevent further damage from rainwater to the fabric of our building. We are expecting the tower and roofs restoration work to start in late June 2026 and take ~6 weeks to complete.
However, our fundraising can't stop! As we need funds in order to apply for grants for new more efficient heating and lighting systems, once our church tower is restored.
Please donate to our restoration fund via our Just Giving page!

Any donations can be given with Gift Aid, which is an Income Tax Relief for UK tax payers. It enables our charity to claim back 25p for every £1 you donate. There is no extra cost to you. Complete a Gift Aid declaration (available in the church pews for cash donations) or say YES to the Gift Aid question when donating online. That’s all there is to it!
