Gertrude Jekyll and Her Garden at Munstead Wood

Talk by Julie Verity

Monday 16th February 2026     7.30pm

Gertrude Jekyll 1843 – 1932 created over 400 gardens, wrote many books and over 1000 articles for magazines such as Country Life and The Garden. She designed her garden at Munstead Wood. The house there was built by Edward Lutyens, the first of their house-and-garden collaborations. She has been described as ‘a premier influence in garden design’. Jekyll is particularly remembered for her outstanding designs of her hardy flower borders.

Julie studied Horticulture and Plant Physiology at University, gaining two degrees and doing post-doctoral work in New Zealand. After a successful career in business and education, she has returned to her love of plants through painting and giving talks about gardens and gardening heroes.

All About Salvias

Talk by Steve Edney

The world of salvias is vast, horticulturist Steve Edney picks his favourite species and cultivars, from the tough Balkan sages, to salvias for shade, through to the dreamy foliage and flowers of some of the more tender forms. Steve will as always offer tips and advice on how to get the best from this amazing group of plants.

There will of course be an opportunity for Q&A

You will remember Steve from his previous very successful talks at the Garden Shed – ‘Drought Tolerant Plants’ and ‘Succession Planting’, plus some of us enjoyed an amazing visit to his nursery in Sandwich, Kent. A feast to the eye and we learnt so much.

Steve is well qualified in many aspics of horticulture and together with Louise have won multiple gold medals at Chelsea Flower Show and best in show at Hampton Court Flower Show also winning a gold award from Kent wildlife trust for gardening for wildlife at The Salutation Garden.

He continues working at his nursery in Sandwich, trials for the RHS, talks for gardening groups and garden design, to name a few.

Plants from Steve and Lou's nursery, ‘The No Name Nursery’ will also be available for sale after the talk.

We will supply all the necessary for your hanging basket. Following a demonstration, you can create your own hanging basket and take it home to grow on and finally display in your garden.

A Visit to Little Brook Fuchsias

In 1986 Carol started Little Brook Fuchsias Nursery with the help of her mother. She now sells a vast variety of Fuchsias including Bush (ideal for pots and tubs), Basket Cultivars, Species (those that were originally found in South America and New Zealand), Hardy Cultivars, Encliandras (these have shrubby type growth, tiny flowers and small leaves), Triphylia Types (which are typically distinguished by flowers with long tubers and dark foliage), and also, some new cultivars. The list is almost endless.

There will of course be a chance to buy some of Carol’s fuchsias.

Tool Sharpening Day

Horticultural Show from 2.30pm – 4.30pm

Bring along your Gardening tools and kitchen Knives to be sharpened during the Mickleham and Westhumble Horticultural Show.

Each item sharpened for only £5

This includes a £1 donation to the charity ‘Home Start’ 

Secateurs, Shears, Spades, Folks, Scissors and Kitchen Knives can all be brought back to life.

Behind the Scenes at Strathmore Plants

Back in 2023 Andy and Amanda came and gave an amazing talk ‘The Fantastic World of Seeds’. They are both passionate about growing plants and all it involves.

Since then, they have set up their own nursery near Arundel, West Sussex and we have arranged to visit them to see first-hand how they propagate, grow on and prepare for the sale of their excellent plants. 

We will also have the opportunity to buy some of their excellent plants.

Scentsational Gardening

Talk by Caroline Halfpenny

This talk includes a month by month look at different plants that can be grown to give us wonderful scents in our garden. There will be some sample plants to smell.

Caroline is passionate about gardening and the landscape. After working with Gravesham Borough Council parks department and allotments, she completed her degree in Landscape Management and became a Mum. She went on to do a Diploma in Horticulture at Hadlow College in addition to lecturing at all levels from schools and Foundation through to Higher Education. She still lectures part time today as well as running Growth Matters, which covers all her loves, Gardening and Education.

Grow Your Own Micro Greens 

Talk, Demonstration and Practical Session by Fergus from Micro Greens

Tuesday 3rd November 2026     7.30pm 

At the Stepping Stones Pub Westhumble, RH5 6BS

Fergus will explain what micro greens are, their health benefits and how to grow and prepare them. Followed by sample tasting and food Ideas.

For the practical session, you will each be given a grow pack. You can then choose the seeds you want to grow and start them off to take home and harvest when ready.

Finally, there will be a market stall available for purchases of organic seeds, gift grow packs and more, with the opportunity of some cheese tasting.

There will be the opportunity for Q&A, together with tips and advice

Christmas Wreaths and Table Decorations Workshop

By popular demand, we are once again hosting a Christmas Workshop. Enjoy the morning and make either a Christmas Wreath or Table Decoration. This annual event is the perfect way to start the Christmas season. 

You will start the morning with tea and coffee while we demonstrate the Wreath and Table Decoration process. Then you can start your own creation, selecting from our extensive choice of materials. Refreshments will be served during the morning, including tea, coffee, homemade mince pies and sausage rolls. A complimentary mulled wine will also be served and you can enjoy the festive music while you work.
