A Talk by Hazel Mills titled "Company and Correspondence: Two Ann(e)s and Jane in Alton"
In 1815, Jane Austen's friend and former governess at Godmersham, Ann Sharp visited Chawton. Around the same time Jane had also become friends with Ann Barrett, the wife of a lawyer working in Alton. Although little has been documented about these two women, particularly Ann Barrett, both were important figures in Jane's life. Hazel will explore the realities of their lives, their relationship with Jane and also shedding light on the broader circumstances of women in the early 19th Century
