West’s Wood Fair is an event featuring the many interesting ways in which wood is used.
Exhibitors include trade stands selling timber and many other wood-related products, demonstrations of sawmilling, pole lathes, and hurdle making.
Joining again will be the Hamble and Hound Gundog Club providing gundog displays twice a day. On the Saturday & Sunday they will also be running a dog scurry, whether your dog is a seasoned pro or has never done it before, they are welcome to have a go.
There will be our chainsaw race on the Saturday & Sunday and pole climbing demonstrations across all 3 days. Joining again on Saturday & Sunday will be The Dorset Axemen, who’s displays contain all aspects of speed and accuracy chopping and crosscut sawing with razor sharp axes and saws.
The British Lawnmower Racing Association will be running lawnmower racing on the Saturday & Sunday.
Weather permitting there will be hot air balloons, from the Surrey & Sussex Balloon Group, taking off from the wood fair both early mornings & early evenings.
The Kids Corner will be returning featuring den building, mud kitchens, games, face painting, storytime a couple of times a day, paint your own totem pole & plant your own flower.
Tractor & trailer rides will of course be available taking you into the depths of the forest. Plus newer activities, like crazy croquet and 'I’m a lumberjack get me out of here' are returning.
Sussex Scrumpy Stakes will be held again on Saturday & Sunday, which is a free entry competition. Participants have to drink a glass of scrumpy, before running down the hill, do some apple bobbing, down a shot, then the winning contestant is the one who finds the golden apple in a trailer full of sawdust, and walks away with a prize of £100.
There will be lots of other activities to take part in, such as axe-throwing and archery, or you could try your hand at the timber identification competition or hammer in the nail challenge, both of which are free to enter. Plus the log roll will be available, which is always popular with the kids.
Chainsaw carving competition will run over all 3 days, and once again on Sunday the public will be able to vote for the winner. There may be an auction end of the day Sunday where you’ll have the chance to win some of the carvings.
There will be a wide range of food and drink available. The Woodturner’s Rest will once again be opening it’s doors and serving a selection of locally produced real ales. And there will be live music going on throughout the weekend.
