Shropshire Council consultation on garden waste charges and household recycling centres

Shropshire Council is planning to introduce an annual subscription fee for the collection of garden waste from properties in the Shropshire Council area. They are also considering reducing the number of household recycling centres in the county, or reducing their opening times. If you choose to pay an annual subscription fee Shropshire Council would continue to collect your garden bin every two weeks on your usual collection day.

Shropshire Council are proposing an annual subscription charge of £52, or £1 a week, and you'd be able to sign up at any time of the year. You'd need one subscription for each garden bin that you'd like to be collected.

NB. Food waste collections will be suspended once the garden waste subscription comes into effect, and will not be reintroduced until April 2026 (when it will become law to provide a weekly food waste collection service). In the interim, food waste CANNOT go in the garden waste bin (it will have to go in black bins) as Councils are not currently allowed to charge a fee for food collection service.

In this consultation Shropshire Council are asking whether you'd be willing to pay more than the the proposed £52/year to help to ensure that the five household recycling centres remain open at the same times as they are now.

The survey takes around ten minutes to complete, and they'd like to hear as many people’s views as possible, including alternative suggestions.
