The M27 will be closed in both directions between Junctions 9 (Whiteley) and 11 (Fareham) from 8pm on 24 December 2025 until 4am on 4 January 2026.

The closure of this section of the M27 is essential to install a new underpass using an innovative engineering method. This approach avoids months of lane restrictions, speed limits, and overnight works, and by using this advanced technique for the first time in Hampshire, the contractors can significantly reduce the impact on road users.

To reduce disruption and keep traffic moving during the closure, the following measures are in place or planned:

  • Inspections and repairs completed on the A27, plus a restriction on roadworks along the A27 during December 2025 and January 2026.
  • Advance signage across the wider road network—including the M25, M3, M4, A3, A27 and A34—to inform drivers early and support re-routing. Traffic levels will be monitored in real time, with updates shown on electronic road signs (Variable Message Signs).
  • Traffic signal adjustments at key locations, including M27 Junctions 9 and 11 and the A27, to help manage flow during the closure.
  • Recovery support on the official diversion route, backed by a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order to prevent waiting and loading, ensuring broken-down vehicles can be removed quickly and route maintained clear.
  • Coordination with key agencies, including Hampshire’s emergency services and local authorities.
