Parish Council Volunteers Make the Community Great
Become a Cosgrove Parish Councillor and make a positive difference to the community!
By representing your local community in this voluntary role you will:
- Influence decisions on local issues – planning applications, local amenities, ensuring the community’s views are heard.
- Be part of local projects – decide when and which projects funding should support, including play areas, events and developing local plans to improve quality of life.
- Develop new or use your current skills – this role brings practical experience in leadership, communication, finance, decision making, problem solving and so much more.
- Provide services to meet needs – link with other councillors, community groups, police, health to address concerns and build this community and its relationships through networking and representing our residents.
- Contribute to fund raising – raise money through the precept, apply for grants and funding to improve and create opportunities for the community.

Commitment –
- 10 meetings per year - 7.30pm, the first Wednesday of the month (except January and August).
- Meetings last 2-3 hours.
- Sub-committees for specific issues
- Representing the council on an external body or community activities
Length of service – the post lasts for 4 years, with the option to stand for re-election.
Eligibility – you must:
- Be a British subject, or citizen of the Commonwealth
- Be over 18
- Be a resident within the council parish area or within 3 miles for a minimum of 12 months as owner or tenant of any land or premises
- Have had your principal or only place of work in the council area or within 3 miles of it for the whole period, over the last 12 months
- A local government elector for the council area for which you want to stand
- Agree to sign up to the Code of Conduct.
Restrictions
You cannot stand if you:
- are subject of a bankruptcy restriction order or interim order.
- have, within five years before the day of the election, been convicted in the United Kingdom of any offence and have had a sentence of imprisonment (whether suspended or not) for a period of over three months without the option of a fine.
- work for the council where you want to become a parish councillor for ( you can work for other local authorities).
