Bovingdon Connect Social Gathering

On 14h March 2024 Lorraine Hedger threw open the doors of her wonderful house and garden to welcome her fellow volunteers from Bovingdon Connect for their first social gathering since restarting the service after “Lockdown” – she even arranged good weather!

Twenty-five people were there, bringing a vast selection of cakes, biscuits and raffle prizes. The objective for the get-together was to enable people who are normally just dealing with their colleagues as the sender or recipient of WhatsApp messages and the occasional phone call, to put faces to names and chat about their experiences, backgrounds and life in general in Bovingdon

Gary Cullom from The Villager was invited to take a group photo, which was done early on before some people had to leave but a couple of people who could not join us straight away missed out. Dick Gardener, the organiser for Bovingdon Connect, said that he had considered doing some “Photoshopping” to get them in but, in view of recent criticism of some Royal Family photographs, decided not to - or did he?

Gary was so taken with our hospitality and the cakes that he stayed until the end. He could have gone away with several raffle prizes but kept saying “draw again”. In addition to Gary &The Villager, particular thanks must go to two local firms for supporting us with vouchers: Drift Limits for a Supercar Driving Experience and Meat Hook for a voucher to spend in their shop. Potential clients shouldn’t panic about our winner of the Drift Limits voucher driving too fast, they will have got that out of their system! The raffle raised nearly enough to cover the cost of the new mobile phone that we use to operate the service.

Bovingdon Connect is the local Volunteer Driver service, which people in the Bovingdon area can call if they are unable to find other ways of getting transport for medical appointments (primarily). For more details see the Home page.
