Thames Valley Police Rural Crime Taskforce - Advice for dog walkers around livestock
Livestock worrying isn't just a risk to animal welfare; it causes significant distress and financial loss to farmers
Loose dogs can negatively impact livestock:
- Physical exertion and heightened distress from attempting to run away
- The mere presence of a predatory animal can be enough to cause stress
- Livestock may become injured and suffer death
- Pregnant ewes can lose their lambs due to stress
Farmers also suffer consequences:
Costly veterinary bills
Loss of livestock
Unnecessary stress
Responsible dog ownership is crucial to prevent livestock worrying. Always keep dogs under control and on a lead around livestock, even if you believe they are well-trained. Good training can also help prevent dogs from showing predatory behaviour around other animals
The Rural Crime Taskforce will take positive action with the owners of dogs who worry/attack livestock Please report all incidents to us for investigation
