The History of RAF Usworth 1916 to 1962
Washington History Society
The airfield at Usworth was created in 1916 to defend the coast of the north east. It was deactivated in 1919 but re-opened and extended before World War Two. It remained as a Royal Air Force base throught the war and up to 1962, when Sunderland Borough Council bought it. This the story of its miltary years. It is available as a two part history, with an option to read a single pdf version.
The History Society would to hear from anyone who can add to the story of these years with photographs and stories
