Carharrack parish council are looking for a new member!

There has never been a better time to make a difference to your community.

The application process is simple, please indicate your interest to the Clerk along with submission of a brief CV, with reasons why you would like to be a Councillor, the skills you could offer and any areas of special interest. Councillors then consider this and can offer you co-option to the Council. You will need to complete a declaration of acceptance of office and complete a statement declaring any personal or pecuniary interests which is submitted to Cornwall Council.

Parish council meetings take place on the third Monday of each month at the Mills Hall.

Being a member of the parish council is rewarding and interesting. More powers and responsibilities are being devolved to parish/town level and it really is down to communities to help change the future of the communities in which we work and live.

What is a councillor?

Councillors are elected to represent the parish. They are generally elected by the public every four years, as there were not enough candidates at the recent election there is one space available for co-option.

What do councillors do?

Councillors have three main components to their work.

1. Decision making – Through meetings and attending committees with other elected members, councillors decide which activities to support, where money should be spent, what services should be delivered and what policies should be implemented.
2. Monitoring – Councillors are involved in the community and can monitor how decisions that have been made are proceeding.
3. Getting involved locally – As local representatives, councillors have responsibilities towards their constituents and local organisations. These responsibilities and duties often depend on what the councillor wants to achieve and how much time is available, and may include:

• Attending meetings of local organisations such as the Mining Villages Regeneration Group
• Attending meetings of bodies affecting the wider community (Camborne,Redruth, Illogan Pool Community Network)
• Considering issues brought forward by members of the public
• Liaising and meeting with the Climate emergency group

How much time does it take up?

Quite often councillors say that their duties occupy them for about three hours a week. Obviously, there are some councillors who spend more time than this – and some less, but in the main, being a, parish councillor is an enjoyable way of contributing to your community, and helping to make it a better place to live and work.

As a councillor representing your community you will help keep it a great place to live and work. You will be supported in your role and will be expected to undertake training. You should be comfortable working electronically. You should have a positive outlook and a can-do attitude and be willing to work as part of a team.
