Identity theft is when someone steals your personal information or possessions so they can use your identity.

Identity fraud is when they use your identity for their own financial gain – which ultimately costs you dearly.

Often these crimes remain undetected for some time, you may not even realise your information’s been stolen until a bill or welcome letter arrives for something you didn’t buy or sign up for, or you find it difficult to take out a credit card or mobile phone contract.

If your personal details/identity could have been fraudulently used or the security of your personal information has been compromised, it is recommended that you regularly check your credit score (e.g., Experian, Clear Score). If you notice any fraudulent applications, please contact the company immediately to make them aware that you did not make this application.

You may also wish to register personal protection on https://www.cifas.org.uk/services/identity-protection. CIFAS Personal protection will add a marker against your details advising companies that you have previously been a victim of fraud. It therefore adds an extra level of security to prevent fraudulent applications being made in your name.
