ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I am a practising Ceramic artist and a Painter. My Postgraduate Degree was in Fine Art. I paint and draw both figuratively and make abstract collages using oil paint and torn printed paper. I enjoy using oil paint for it's unctuousness and intensity of colour. With drawing there are strong similarities between making marks and painting on clay and drawing on paper with pencil. I aim to bring together these two processes to create ceramics that people enjoy and are functional.

The City Lit is an adult education centre for the pursuit of excellence:

As one of the lucky chosen applicants for The Ceramics Diploma course beginning in September 10th 2015, I would like say a few words.

Quoted from the online information:  "The course entails a two year programme of study that is project-based and deals with the development of personal ideas and all aspects of ceramic processes, including glaze technology.  In the second year the course works towards a final exhibition ( Business Design centre Islington ) with self-planned projects through which personal ideas will be fully developed.  Techniques and ideas are taught alongside each other throughout the course.  Art History and Ceramics Contextual Studies are taught in both years."

By the end of the course each individual will Be an independent maker within the field of contemporary ceramics. The individual will understand how their work fits into a broad context of the ceramic medium and will be able to define and work confidently in the area they have chosen to specialise in.  The course is a University, Higher Education Diploma course."

Each applicant should be able to follow written / verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. The ability to use numbers and to be able to do measurements and calculations must be evident.  There are essays in years one and two that need to be completed on this course". Quote ended.

Mental health is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.

Social wellbeing, social connectedness and social networks - this is what City Lit and other Adult education centres have to offer when placed in the bigger picture.  This is just one of the reasons why they are so important.  People bring their passion to learn.

Such educational establishments allow people to progress with their skills to apply for further degrees and / or to find employment.  For a lot of people these places are incredibly important as they help to shape and create a sense of achievement in people's personal lives.
