Arabella Ross About Us
The colours, influences and ideas expressed in my paintings on canvas emanate from a voice within. The voice is the paint, pigments, images, drawings and marks which come together to form a narrative. Narrative and drawing are always the starting points.

The materials I use are extremely important; charcoal, rubbers and quality paper for my charcoal drawings, endless pencils for my sketchbook.  With my paintings I enjoy using oils, mediums, glazes and gold leaf which I apply to the small collages.  For my oil paintings I work on a stretched rabbit skin glue surface using Belgian linen.  Here layers are built up to form a work that is saturated with colour, areas of dark and light, matt and shiny surfaces. I use my hands ( with gloves ), paintbrushes and a palette knive to create the finished piece.

Creating work is physical demanding because the initial gestures and marks I make express themselves from a physicality within, a driving energy that is responding to internal landscapes and thinking processes.  I attack the canvas with an intensity of emotion and passion.  This is enthralling as it represents a “potential” and a beginning where risk is involved and there is no known end as the work is in a constant state of flux.  In the early stages as the paintings evolve I surround myself with images of drawings from my sketch books and ideas working out my concepts. I find the inspiration and ideas that come to me hugely exciting because it is the imagination and metaphor ( not logic ) that are the true currency of the mind.
