Came & Company
In 2006, Peter Came saw an opportunity to provide local councils with a specialist council insurance policy that included all the covers they might require - regardless of size. Both his parents had served as councillors during their lives, and he was horrified at the lack of cover being sold to council’s. He set about writing a policy that provided good people, like his parents, with the insurance cover they needed.
Whether acting as a local councillor, employee or volunteer, people should expect to be covered in case the unexpected should happen, whilst carrying out their local council's business.
For many years, over 90% of local council insurance has been arranged by two companies, and annual premiums had increased year-on-year – regardless of the claims made. The cover provided seemed to depend on the knowledge of the local clerk. Personal service and independent advice was, at best, limited – but in most cases unavailable.
Peter’s key objective was to provide an inclusive insurance policy that would address the main covers required by local councils as standard. He wanted to build strong relationships with all local council clients based on professional advice and quality, personal service.
Aviva agreed to underwrite a bespoke council insurance policy for Came & Company, and with the support of the Hampshire Association of Local Councils they ran a pilot scheme. The success of this scheme led to further development of the policy, and the Came & Company Scheme was launched in 2008. We now provide cover and services to over three thousand local councils, and the scheme continues to grow. Over the last six years, we have:
- added experienced and knowledgeable staff to our team in order to maintain our high level of customer service
- enlisted regional account executives who are strategically situated across the country, and who are tasked with visiting and advising our council customers
- launched our charity & not-for-profit scheme
- developed insurance seminars, allowing for interactive debate and topic-driven discussion
- settled in excess of £3 million in claims and successfully assisted our council clients in defending over £1.5 million of third party claims.
During the last three years alone, we have visited over 700 councils, provided over 150 training sessions and attended more than 100 conferences. In 2014, we were greatly honoured to be appointed principal sponsor of the SLCC for the next three years.
In 2014, we were delighted to announce that we were introducing another of the UK’s leading insurers to the local council sector. Established in 1946 by Ralph Hiscox, another man who was prepared to put his name to his business, Hiscox Underwriting Ltd has become one of the UK’s most highly respected insurance companies.
The Hiscox ethos is that insurance is about keeping a promise, to be there when needed. Hiscox believes that promises rely on responsibility, trust and honour; three qualities that are in plentiful supply in this sector, and that is why they agreed to join our underwriting panel. We are not sure who Mr Aviva was, but along with Mr Hiscox and Mr Came, the future of local council insurance is in very safe hands!
