In recent years, gear skiving, also known as power skiving, has been drawing increased attention as a productive and precise cutting method, especially for internal gears. It is not a new concept, with the initial solution being patented in 1910 in Germany! The recent development in machine controls, machine hardware, and tool design have made it possible to apply the idea from 1910 on an industrial scale for making gears and splines, today.

Over the last 2 years R E Thompson have been working closely with a large UK based defence company on a programme utilising internal gear skiving. With the commissioning of our new OKUMA U4000 machine in May, full production will start on a high value 5-year contract to supply parts containing precision cut internally skived gears.

This is an exciting time, R E Thompson have always welcomed and been open to collaborative projects and happy to invest in equipment to support these endeavours, and this time with a cutting-edge capability to boot!
