UK Men's Shed Association

INTRODUCTION

Men's Sheds originated in Australia and The Shed or any suitable building brought Men together to socialise and communicate and the concept was to address loneliness, Isolation and depression amongst elderley men. This was achieved by bringing them together and where possible and by choice perform crafts, either building on existing skills or learning new ones.  The objective being to enable them get used to being together and help merge individuals into the local community.

The UK Men's Shed Association (UKMSA) is a support body for Men's Sheds across the UK. They work to inspire and support the development of as many Men's Sheds as possible for the benefit of one's health and well being. They are a member organisation representing UK Based Men's sheds. They raise awareness of the Sheds movement and the many benefits of shedding and support Sheds in getting off the ground and thriving as community driven, member led entities. They don't own or manage Sheds but champion them for miles around.

WHAT UKMSA DOES

They raise awareness of the social and health benefits of Sheds in reducing isolation, loneliness and in empowering local communities. Growth is supported by:-

  • Promoting the Men' Shed movement
  • Promoting Individual Sheds
  • Providing advice and guidance on starting up and running a shed
  • Training volunteer Ambassadors
  • Holding Networking events to connect people
  • Talking about the social and health benefits
  • Representing members  and the UKMSA movement  at Local, National and International level.

There are now Women's Sheds and women in Men's Sheds.
