ABC to Read
Our aim as a charity is to help as many children as we can to improve their reading and so enable them to achieve success in later education and confidently meet the challenges of adult life that follow.
ABC to read believes that children who have poor reading skills benefit enormously from individual attention whether this is from a mentor or parent. Talking and listening to children is important because this provides a nurturing environment within which children develop skills essential to learning to read.
ABC to read can help in two ways :
- By providing volunteer reading mentors who will motivate, raise self esteem and help each child they work with enjoy reading. Our volunteers bring along their own box of books and games. ABC to read support the volunteers by offering them regular training and support from field workers. As well as finding volunteers we can train parent helpers already in school.
- By providing training for parents to enable them to help their own children at home. We can help parents to identify the skills their children need to become successful readers. We will give the parents practical ideas on how to support their children’s learning in school.
