1. BUY LAND
Complete: We have now purchased a viable piece of land on which to build the Afrikaya school. We have obtained Planning Permission and Certificate of Occupancy from the local government offices.
2. APPOINT ADMINISTRATOR
Complete: Administrator appointed. Alimamo Ceesay is currently working alongside the neighbourhood School Management Committee [SMC], overseeing the building and managing the finances in The Gambia.
3. BUILD THE SCHOOL
Plans have been drawn up by Jack Munro and Yashin Kemel, architects who donated their time and expertise.
At the SMC's request, the 'school' will be extended to include a medical center, adult skills center and community center.
It is intended that, where possible, the school will be built using local materials and eco-friendly resources with labour provided by the adults in the neighbourhood. December 2012, the school build has started.
4. EQUIP THE SCHOOL
Supply all the necessary staff, books, stationery, desks and other essential facilities
The first shipment of donated items for the school is on its way and will arrive in The Gambia mid September 2014.
Provide essential training for:
* Adminstrator - this is underway with foremost Early Years expert in The Gambia - Lisong Bah, and in computer skills, via Brikama College.
* School Management Committee - training in interview techniques has already taken place.
* Teaching staff.
