Village Greens

Allendale Parish Council is responsible for two village greens, in Allendale Town and Catton. These are owned by Allendale Estates and managed by the parish council under a lease agreement in 1908, modified in 1932.

These lands are registered as village greens under the 1965 Commons Registration Act (now replaced by the 2006 Commons Act).

Allendale Parish Council has a management agreement dated 2012 for the village greens which enables various management activities as allowed by the 2006 Commons Act.

Village Greens are protected by, and managed in accordance with, various legislation. The main Acts are:

  • Inclosure Act 1857 s12
  • Commons Act 1876 s29
  • Commons Act 2006

There is also case law covering prescriptive rights that various residents and others have over village green land.
