Tree work, Staplefield

ASPC recently had the two red oak trees at the end of Tanyard Lane in Staplefield inspected. This inspection was prompted by the discovery of new fungus on the base of one of the trees. These trees have been monitored for some time, and a few years ago they were reduced to help extend their lifespan.

The initial inspection focused on one tree. A visual examination of the root plate conducted on 26/06/2026 revealed the presence of Ganoderma Resinaceum fructification at the tree's base. This fruiting body is known to cause significant decay of the buttress and root system, greatly undermining its structural stability. Additional fungal brackets were observed on the opposite side of the stem, indicating advanced infection and internal rot throughout the base.

It was decided by the Council to request that the MSDC tree officer visit the site to examine both trees, with the Council committing to follow her advice.

This inspection took place on 14th July, where the tree officer found extensive fungal growth on both trees and recommended their removal for health and safety reasons. When addressing tree-related concerns, the location of the trees must also be considered. Because of the trees' close proximity to the highway and the severity of decay, there is a considerable risk of structural failure, posing a danger to drivers and pedestrians.

ASPC always seeks to avoid felling trees unless necessary; however, health and safety priorities have led to the difficult decision to remove these trees as soon as possible.
