Basingstoke Voluntary Sports Council
Team GB bringing people together
This summer Team GB is are promoting a national celebration of sport (I Am Team GB). From 2019 I Am Team GB will be returning as an annual campaign to encourage people to be physically active in their communities and we would love you to be involved by putting on a activity, big or small, for people in your community, Get creative – do something you think people who want to be active will enjoy,
I Am Team GB
I Am Team GB started in 2016 after the record-breaking Rio 2016 Olympics. It celebrated the incredible feats of returning Team GB Olympians whilst also inspiring the nation to be more active. Almost one million people came together to take part in the Nation’s Biggest Sports Day. I Am Team GB is returning and aiming to continue to inspire more people to be active. It will culminate every August Bank Holiday with the Nation’s Biggest Sports Day and will celebrate the important role that volunteers play in helping more people to be active in their communities.
The Games Makers were a vital part of the success of London 2012. The tens of thousands of volunteers not only made the Games possible but were the face of the Games, giving everyone a great British welcome and a memorable experience. There are hundreds of thousands more people up and down the country helping make sport happen while inspiring people in their communities to be active.
The Nation’s Biggest Sports Day
Saturday 24th August, and every subsequent August bank holiday weekend, will be a day of sport and activity. A day for everyone across the country to enjoy getting out, trying a new activity and encouraging friends and family to do the same. There will be thousands of free and fun activities across the country. They will be for people with a range of experiences and abilities, designed to appeal to anyone who wants to be more active with others in their local communities.
Team GB would like people who are passionate about sport and activity to put on an activity on the Nation’s Biggest Sports Day. These could be any sport or activity, big or small, just for friends or for anyone to join, part of something that already exists or something totally new. Here are just a few examples:
A beginners’ or taster session at your sports club, A walk, bike ride or Swim with family and friends, A friendly football match or 5-a-side competition at the local pitches, A yoga class in a local hall or park, A tag rugby day for parents and children, Dancing Activities, Encouraging people to become Officials or Coaches etc, A fun parents Athletics event, A special event at the local swimming pool or leisure centre, College or School activities, Activities alongside an existing club fixture, Badminton or Table Tennis etc at local Community Centres, Taster fitness or exercise classes for Younger children through to Over 60’s plus Opportunities for Volunteers to Get Active etc...
Local Games Makers will be at the heart of the Nation’s Biggest Sports Day, bringing people together in their community, offering anyone who wants to join in the opportunity to take part in events and activities that they feel comfortable with. And hopefully helping some people continue to be a bit more active in the future.
Basingstoke Voluntary Sports Council would like to encourage as many of the local Sports Clubs, Community and Fitness Centres etc within Basingstoke & Deane to seriously consider taking part in this event as part of the local ‘Basingstoke Get Active’ initiative linked with the Sport & Physical Activity Alliance plus Health & Wellbeing partnership. We can liaise with both the Gazette and Observer Newspaper plus Breeze FM Radio and Hampshire TV to promote activities nearer the date.
It would therefore be greatly appreciated if you could consider this request, discuss it within your organisation and let us know of interest as soon as possible and by Sunday evening April 21st. Maybe a few sports can join together in a joint event locally. This will allow us to let ‘I am Team GB’ know of any local interest and commence co-ordination and promotion of Basingstoke & Deane activities.
I really hope that a wide range of activities can be arranged large or small and demonstrate what a great Sport and Healthy Community we have in Basingstoke & Deane.
