Bishopstoke Parish Council
Carnival 2018 is coming!
Carnival this year is on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th September and the theme is "Under the Sea".
Exciting news from Carnival this year as we are taking a new route. The Parade will set up at the Bishopstoke Community Centre on Sydney Road (the big building opposite St Mary's Church). We will leave the Community Centre at 1pm, head down Sydney Road, turn left and head out to cross Church Road and go along Stoke Park Road. We will then turn right into Sedgwick before swinging left and heading down Underwood Road all the way to Hamilton Road. The final stretch is to head along Hamilton Road all the way to the end. Once we reach Spring Lane the Carnival Courts and anyone else wanting to get into the Meadow can go down Portal Road. Everyone else will have the chance to peel off.
The Parade this year will be exciting too with £50 prize money for each of 5 categories. This year, as well as Children Under 12, Children 12 and Over and Adults, we have added Best Individual / Family and Best Vehicle. Parade entry forms are available here.
The River Float competition takes place as usual on the Saturday morning. In recent years Stoke Park Junior School have proven a tough act to beat. Is anyone going to be able to take their crown away this time? Details and forms can be found here.
Did you know that the Carnival gives out grants to local groups and charities? All the money we collect during the parade goes to local groups. Last year we helped people Age Concern, the Friends of Stoke Park Junior School, Bishopstoke Community Association, Unshakeable+ and ARK Eastleigh. Please make sure you put the amount you are requesting on the form - grants are usually in the £100 to £200 range. Carnival Grant forms are available here, but please note that they have to be handed in before Carnival (the deadline this year is Friday 7th September).
Every year our Carnival Programme Cover is designed by one of the residents in Bishopstoke. This year the theme for Carnival is "Under The Sea". We would like to invite you to create our programme cover, which will then be delivered to every household in Bishopstoke. The best entry goes on the front, the runner up will feature somewhere inside the programme, and there will be a collage of selected others also displayed in the programme. The winner and runner up also receive vouchers.
To enter, all you need to do is sent your programme cover design to Programme Competition, Parish Office, Riverside, Bishopstoke, SO50 6LQ. Alternatively you can post it through our letterbox, or scan and email it to email@example.com.
Here are some guidelines to remember:
- Entries should be done on A4 white paper, in portrait, not landscape
- You must include "Bishopstoke Carnival 2018" in the design
- You must include the dates of Carnival (Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th September) somewhere on the design
- The theme is Under The Sea, so make sure to reflect that in your design
We are also quite fond of our ducks, so if you can include a duck or two in the design, that might get you bonus points!
The closing date for entries is 31st May 2018. The winners will be chosen in June and their prizes will be awarded in the Arena on Sunday 16th September.
Finally, now is your chance to represent Bishopstoke as part of the Carnival Court. As part of the Court you are provided with a new dress or suit for Carnival itself, you take part in a tea party with the Mayor, and you get to go to other Carnivals in the area as a member of the Bishopstoke Carnival Court. To apply, all you need to do is write a letter telling us a little bit about yourself and why you would like to be part of the court. Fill in this application form, and send it and the letter to the address on the form. You need to be 8 years old or more in September, and the closing date is 30th April.
However you can join in, please do. Everyone is welcome and the more the merrier.
The next meeting of the Planning Committee takes place in the Parish office on Tuesday 27th March at 7:00pm. The doors will be open from 6:45pm for anyone wishing to view the planning documents. The agenda is available here, and the draft minutes of the previous meeting are here.
The Full Council will meet at 7:30pm on the same day, following the Planning Committee. The document pack, including the agenda, is available here.
Bishopstoke Beat Surgery
The local Neighbourhood Policing Team are holding a beat surgery at the Parish Office on Monday 26th March from 10am to 11am. Thank you to all those who came to the previous surgeries, whether it was to put a face to a name, report something, or ask questions.
Come along to meet the team, discuss your concerns, get crime prevention advice and talk about your policing priorities.
Further surgeries will be held throughout the year.

Neighbourhood Plan Survey
The closing date for the survey has now passed. The Parish Council and the Neighbourhood Plan group would like to thank everyone who took part - it was a really encouraging turnout.
We are now looking at all the data we have collected to identify the key areas of concern to Bishopstoke residents. There will be more surveys over the next few months as we try to either fill in any missing bits of information, or try to dig a bit deeper into a key topic.
We will also be trying to develop policies and strategies that respond to the concerns and needs that have been highlighted by the survey. These will go on to form the basis of our neighbourhood plan.
It is still really important that as many people as possible get involved, whether it is to join the main steering group, help out with designing or analysing the surveys, or simply deliver leaflets. If you can offer any help at all, whether it be on a regular basis, or just when you can, please get in touch. We can always use more volunteers.
