West Mercia Police is issuing advice to residents to be aware of a scam phone call which has been reported to us recently.
We have received a number of recent reports from several residents in Shropshire that they have had a call HM Revenue and Customs about a lawsuit.
The automated message will state to press a key on their phone to speak to a 'caseworker'. On some calls the victim has then received a follow-up call the following day demanding payment over the phone.
This is is a scam and HMRC, banks and the police would never ring people in this manner or ask for personal or bank details over the phone.
If you receive a call of this type, we would advise that you hang up immediately and report it on 101 using another phone. In an emergency or if a crime is in progress call 999.
You can also report it to Action Fraud via their
website or on 0300 123 2040.
If you have elderly friends or relatives who may be vulnerable to this scam, please talk to them and make them aware.
Many thanks
