Statement from the Parish Council:

"There have been some instances recently where organised motorbike and/or scooter groups have visited Bourton in large numbers, parking on the Village Green, which have caused some considerable comment in newspapers and on social media. The Parish Council thought it may be helpful to explain the background to these events.

As is the case within the vast majority of communities with village greens across the land, motorised vehicles of any kind are not permitted on these grassed areas as governed by the current bye-laws passed in 1966. This is quite standard practice and is particularly relevant in any public open space where pedestrians and families gather. Although the existing bye-laws were established some time ago, as a council, we are obliged to uphold these laws.

The existing bye-laws were established approximately 50 years ago and are now somewhat out of date. We've been advised by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) that these bye-laws should be revoked and new bye-laws established which reflect modern life. The previous bye-laws must be revoked by the Secretary of State before the new bye-laws can be adopted, and we are currently awaiting this authorisation. However, this is proving to be a very lengthy process as we have been chasing this for four years. A full copy of the bye-laws and the village green rules can be found on our website here:

We hope this clarifies our situation and would urge any residents to call 101 (non-emergency number) to report vehicles on the Village Green."
