MDL 2019

2019 MDL Match Reports

MDL Tuesday 3rd September 2019 Victoria Home

The final game of the season and points were at stake.

Following Victoria's fine win against Buckfastleigh on Saturday, Victoria came to us requiring two points to avoid relegation. Likewise Bovey also needed two points, theirs to secure their promotion.

Therefore the scene was set and what transpired can only be described as tense for both teams.

After five ends, Bovey found themselves trailing on two rinks, up in one and level on one.

At ten ends, Bovey were down in three and up in one.

At fifteen ends, up in one down in two and level on the other.

It remained the situation after eighteen ends.

On the nineteenth end the whole match went topsy turvy and Bovey found themselves up on all four rinks with just three ends to play. Could Bovey hold their nerve........

No. Victoria now staring relegation firmly in the face started to fight back and Bovey started to waiver. The first two rinks in the clubhouse settled respective fates by drawing both games and giving each team the points they required.

The third rink in rink skipped by Steve Callard finished with a flourish picking up nine shots to Victoria's two over the last four ends to win their game. The last rink to finish skipped by Peter Martin also drew their game.

So both teams had good reason to celebrate in the clubhouse afterwards!

Well done gentlemen, a fine result. Not only promoted, but promoted as CHAMPIONS.

Phil Joy (Skip), Andy Walding, Chris Shorland and Ray Parker drew 21-21

Derrick Saunders (Skip), Terry England, Dave Johnson and Derek Honeywill drew 19-19

Peter Martin (Skip), Martin Redfern, Brian Glover and Tony Mayall drew 20-20

Steve Callard (Skip), Dave Anderson, Mike Russell and Ian Howkins won 25-22

Match Score: Bovey Tracey 85 Victoria 82

Match Result: Bovey Tracey 11 Victoria 3

MDL Tuesday 20th August 2019 Torbay Country Club "B" Away

Going into the match optimism was high that this may be the night that we achieve promotion. Following results earlier this week it meant that Bovey required five points to secure their target. However, we did not reckon upon the determination of Torbay Country Club to finish their season on a high. This they duly achieved. The rink skipped by Phil Joy never really looked like losing their match but the other three rinks all struggled. Of these rinks, Tony Mayall's looked the most likely and after fourteen ends were trailing by just two shots, but let the game slip away from them on the final seven ends. The rink skipped by Derrick Saunders provided some cheer. Losing by seven shots going into the twentieth end managed to pick up a four and a three to tie the game. This gave Bovey a total of three match points meaning that a further two points are required from their final home game against Victoria to secure promotion and maybe more to finish as champions. There is still work to do gentlemen!

Phil Joy (Skip), Andy Walding, Chris Shorland and Ray Parker won 26-15

Peter Martin (Skip), Dave Johnson, Steve Callard and Trevor Norman lost 5-30

Derrick Saunders (Skip), Terry England, Mike Russell and Derek Honeywill drew 19-19

Tony Mayall (Skip), Martin Redfern, Ian Howkins and Brian Glover 10-17

Match Score: Bovey Tracey 60 Torbay Country Club 81

MDL Monday 12th August 2019 Shaldon "B" Home

Following the publication of the most recent MDL league table and before the start of their game against Shaldon, Bovey Tracey found themselves requiring a maximum of nineteen points to secure promotion.

The match did not start well for the hosts. They made hard work of it and after ten ends found themselves trailing on three rinks and down overall in the match by six shots. However, all hands were put to the pump and a determined effort saw two of the three rinks swing our way. This turned the tide against Shaldon and Bovey surfaced victorious by three rinks to one and the match by seven shots.

The result was a satisfying one for the home team who in the earlier reverse fixture against Shaldon went down on all four rinks for their heaviest defeat of the season. To complete the night the result has almost guaranteed Bovey promotion back to Division One at the first attempt and now gives them a shot of going up as champions. If the author’s maths is correct, Bovey require seven points from their remaining two matches to achieve this.

Phil Joy (Skip), Andy Walding, Chris Shorland and Ray Parker won 20-18

Derrick Saunders (Skip), Dave Anderson, Steve Callard and Trevor Norman lost 11-30

Peter Martin (Skip), Dave Johnson, Derek Honeywill and Tony Mayall won 19-17

Ted Ridgewell (Skip), Martin Redfern, Ian Howkins and Brian Glover won 35-13

Match Score: Bovey Tracey 85 Shaldon 78

Match Result: Bovey Tracey 12 Shaldon 2

MDL Tuesday 6th August 2019 Paignton "B" Home

Bovey were the hosts to Paignton "B" who before the game sat just above the relegation zone. Bovey were never seriously troubled with good performances from the rinks skipped by Phil Joy and Peter Martin. Bovey's other rink Skipped by Derrick Saunders was never really in contention finding themselves 2-12 down after the first six ends. It was a battle all the way with the visitors claiming a precious two points in their fight against relegation.

MDL Tuesday 16th July 2019 Abbrook Park "A" Away

Bovey were visitors for the return match of Abbrook Park. A visit to the current leaders with a number of first team players missing was always going to be tough, and so it proved. In a very tight match which was impossible to call to the last, both sides won on two rinks but Bovey miraculously emerged triumphant by one shot. This seemed particularly harsh on our hosts who if the score were the other way there would have been no complaints. This result consolidates our second place behind Abbrook but with a game in hand.

Phil Joy (Skip), Keith Lockett, Terry England and Chris Shorland lost 15-18

Peter Martin (Skip), Dave Anderson, I Howkins and Derek Honeywill won 17-13

MDL Tuesday 2nd July 2019 Torbay Country Club "B" Home

Our third home match and our first home defeat are the headlines from our game against TCBC “B”. This was a strange match in which Bovey were always trailing on two rinks, well ahead in another and with the game swinging between sides on the fourth. The teams that trailed never got back into contention eventually losing both their games. The other two rinks edged out the visitors particularly on the rink skipped by Derek Saunders who going into the final end were all square after winning only one of the previous nine ends. They did however manage to take the final end and the game with two shots. So, two rinks apiece but the spoils go to Torbay.

Derek Saunders (Skip), Dave Johnson, Trevor Norman and Steve Callard won 23-21

Colin Wright (Skip), Ken Gay, Martin Redfern and Derek Honeywill lost 16-27

Ted Ridgewell (Skip), Dave Anderson, Ian Howkins and Peter Martin lost 15-19
