Madeira BC Saturday 29th June 2019

Anne Russell competed in the Major Four Wood Singles at Madeira this weekend. Anne had qualified by defeating three opponents and winning through in Section 5 at Newton Abbot in May. This enabled her to go forward to play in last sixteen of the county.

In Anne’s first match she was drawn to play Elizabeth Lock from Torquay BC. Anne ran out the winner by 21 shots to 10 proceeding to the last eight of the competition. In the quarter final Anne was drawn to play Alison Spreadborough from Plymouth’s Sir Francis Drake BC. This proved to be a bridge too far for Anne. She fought valiantly but succumbed to Alison by 21 shots to 16. After the match it was discovered that Alison was a John’s Trophy player and a former junior international. Anne can be proud of her journey and take comfort in the fact that in only her second year of major competition she played so many good players and progressed so far. Well done Anne you finished in the top eight of the County and are a credit to the club you represent.

In the semi-final, Alison lost to Natalie Chestney from Kings, herself an England International.

Anne marked the other semi-final in which Harriet Stevens, also from Kings, and also an England International beat Gill Grantham of Plymouth Sir Francis Drake.

So the two players who progress to Leamington are Natalie and Harriet. Congratulation to them both.
