2019 Over 55 Match Reports

Whilst no titles have been conferred this year Bovey continues to be a force in the Over 55 League. Our "Y" team finished third with our "X" team finishing runners-up in their respective divisions. Good work gentlemen, keep it up!

Over 55 Week 17 Wednesday 4th September 2019

Bovey "X" finished the Over 55 programme for the club with their re-arranged Week 17 fixture away to Buckfastleigh BC.

The finale produced another good result for our team taking all the points on offer. Proceedings felt a little flat as any interest in the title had evaporated with the previous weeks defeat.

P Martin (Skip), S Callard and A Mayall won 9-16

D Saunders (Skip), D Johnson and J Dore won 14-16

Match Score: Bovey Tracey 32 Buckfastleigh 23

Match Result: Bovey Tracey 8 Buckfastleigh 0

Over 55 Week 18 Wednesday 28th August 2019

The final scheduled Over 55 games for "X" and "Y" of the 2019 season ended woefully for both teams. With both having home advantage neither team were able to benefit on a morning of sunshine and showers. Bovey "X" required a good win in order to maintain the challenge for the league title but found their opponents too strong for the second time this season. Both rinks went to the final end but Abbrook Park always seemed to be the more likely overall victors. Bovey "X" will finish their programme away to Buckfastleigh next Wednesday.

Derrick Saunders (Skip), Mike Russell and Steve Callard lost 14-16

Peter Martin (Skip), Alan Windmill and Brian Glover lost 15-21

Match Score: Bovey Tracey 29 Abbrook Park 37

Match Result: Bovey Tracey 0 Abbrook Park 8

In the match against Kings, "Y" did not seem to have an answer to a very good opposition. On the rink skipped by Colin Wright Bovey only scored on seven rinks. Stranger still was Phil Joy's rink where the score was 6-6 after six ends. This was the last end where Bovey recorded a score losing twelve successive ends.

Colin Wright (Skip), Dave Andrson and Trevor Norman lost 9-22

Phil Joy (Skip), Ian Howkins and Keith Lockett lost 6-26

Match Score: Bovey Tracey 15 Kings 48

Match Result: Bovey Tracey 0 Kings 8

Over 55 Week 16 Tuesday 27th August 2019

A chance for "Y" to play one of their earlier games which was disrupted by the weather. The venue was Abbrook Park and Bovey turned in another sparkling performance, however, this will not be enough to catch the leaders Bitton Park so it is a race for the runners-up spot.

Phil Joy (Skip), Andy Walding and Chris Shorland won 25-10

Ian Howkins (Skip), Keith Lockett and Martin Redfern won 20-10

Over 55 Week 17 Wednesday 14th August 2019

A rest week for "X" and so the focus was on "Y". Bovey were visitors to the league leaders Bitton Park and turned in a creditable performance in winning one and narrowly losing the other and had not Bitton Park had an extensive lead in the division may have had some say in the outcome of the the title. The performance augars well for season 2020.

Derek Honeywill (Skip) Andy Walding and Martin Redfern lost 18-20

Phil Joy (Skip), Ian Howkins and Chris Shorland won 23-9

Over 55 Week 15 Wednesday 7th August 2019

A rare morning where both "X" and "Y" were hosts.

The visitors for "X" were Kingsteignton BC and for the home side a win was essential to maintain their chances of winning the title whilst their challengers Teignmouth Den had a rest week. The game started well for the home team and after eleven ends both rinks were leading quite comfortably. As two weeks ago, Bovey yet again wobbled, and whilst the result on one rink was beyond doubt, the other at sixteen ends was all square. This made for a nervous final two ends. Bovey managed to regain their composure and win each of the final two ends by one shot to secure the maximum number of points.

Derrick Saunders (Skip), Mike Russell and Tony Mayall won 25-5

Steve Callard (Skip), Les Fullbrook and John Dore won 18-16

Match Score: Bovey Tracey 43 Kingsteignton 21

Match Result: Bovey Tracey 8 Kingsteignton 0

Bovey "Y" were hosts to Shaldon BC and also required maximum points to try and keep the pressure on leaders Bitton Park. Both rinks started well and at the turnaround were in front. However, after tea, fortune was hiding with one rink going on to win whilst the other went on to lose. Unfortunately for Bovey the loss was greater than the win and Shaldon went on to take the bulk of the spoils.

Phil Joy (Skip), Dave Anderson and Martin Redfern lost 12-18

Derek Honewill (Skip), Alan King and Chris Shorland won 16-13

Match Score: Bovey Tracey 28 Shaldon 31

Match Points: Bovey Tracey 2 Shaldon 6

Over 55 Week 14 Wednesday 31st July 2019

A good win for Bovey "X" which puts them back in contention for the title. The rink skipped by Derrick Saunders was never in trouble as to the outcome but the other rink skipped by Peter Martin was closer and went to the final end before Bovey could claim all the match points.

Derrick Saunders (Skip), Mike Russell, and John Dore won 20-6

Peter Martin (Skip), Alan Windmill and Brian Glover won 15-12

Match Score: Bovey Tracey 35 Bitton Park 18

Match Points: Bovey Tracey 8 Bitton Park 0

A similar tale for "Y" where the rink skipped by Phil Joy were always in control. The other rink skipped by Derek Honeywill went to the last. They just needed to win the final end, however Chudleigh proved resilient and took the end to draw the game.

Phil Joy (Skip), Ian Howkins and Chris Shorland won 23-10

Derek Honeywill (Skip), Andy Walding and Trevor Norman derw 17-17

Over 55 Week 13 Monday 22nd July 2019

No sooner than climbing to the top of the league, Bovey Tracey “X” were brought crashing back to earth with a home defeat which may have damaged their chances of appearing at the finals in September. Despite trailing on one of the rinks for most of the game, with four ends remaining Bovey were up ten shots overall and looking to take the match. However, in the last four ends Bovey lost their nerve and dropped five shots on both rinks handing the match to Newton Abbot by one shot.

Peter Martin (Skip), Les Fullbrook and Dave Johnson lost 12-24

Tony Mayall (Skip), Terry England and Brian Glover won 27-16

Over 55 Week 12 Wednesday 17th July

As we reach the final run of games in the Over 55 League, so each game becomes increasingly important for those with an interest in the League titles. Bovey “X” were the visitors to Shaldon in a match between second and third in the league. Bovey “X” had previously been beaten at home by Shaldon by 1-7 so it was very satisfying to reverse the score at their place.

At the time of writing this piece I have learnt that Bovey Tracey are the new leaders of the division following the defeat of Teignmouth Den at the hands of Newton Abbot.

Derek Saunders (Skip), Dave Johnson and Brian Glover won 20-10

Peter Martin (Skip), Alan Windmill and A Mayall lost 10-16

Match Score:   Bovey Tracey 30 Shaldon 26

Bovey “Y” were also still in the chase for their division title but needed a good result against the current leaders Kingsteignton. The rink skipped by Phil Joy were never in trouble whilst the rink skipped by Ian Howkins appeared a lot closer but they also ran out comfortable winners after restricting the opposition to just two shots in the final eight ends.

Ian Howkins (Skip), Dave Anderson and Derek Honeywill won 24-12

Phil Joy (Skip), Chris Shorland and Keith Lockett won 25-8
