THE MATHEWS FAMILY

One November when two men from the Whitechapel Foundry let down our eight Church bells, amongst those watching was Mrs. Esther Brown. I remembered that many years ago her elderly blind father was the foreman of the bell-ringers. After losing his sight in 1917, William Mathews, his wife Ada and two young daughters, Evelyn and Esther, came to live at Rushdens, a cottage on the north side of the Bucklebury – Stanford Dingley Road. Later they moved to Glebe Cottage, where Mrs. Findlater now lives, and where the third daughter, Joan, was born, and finally to Wavern, which they had built for themselves and in which the Lewington family lived, Gill being a granddaughter.
