At its last meeting the Committee discussed how we could make more sustainable arrangements for catering at friendly and league home matches in the coming season. Socialising with visiting teams after a game is an important part of playing bowls, so we need to keep the tradition of supplying teas going.

We would therefore like to adopt a procedure used successfully at many other similar clubs, whereby 2 members pair up and take on the responsibility of providing tea or supper at a selected home match. Obviously, this needs the agreement and cooperation of all our members, but assuming every member joins in, each pair would only need to cater for one or at most two games over the season.

How it works

  • A list of home games will be posted on the noticeboard and each pair should put their names down against a match they are available to cater for.
  • Meals for all regular friendly games are sandwiches and cakes: advice on quantities for each game will be provided
  • The club will pay for all food required (e.g. bread, cakes, fillings, salad), so nobody needs to be out of pocket. There are also normally stocks of common sandwich items such as cheese, pate, butter/spread, pork pies, sausage rolls in the fridge at the Club, which you can use.
  • You don’t have to make all the cakes and sandwiches yourself, if you can persuade other members to help you.
  • Advice on what needs to be done and setting out tables will be provided: you will not just be left on your own
  • The captain on the day will nominate who is to wash up after the game, though all members present should be prepared to help in the clearing up.

None of this can happen without someone to organise the system and one of our newer members and as a start, one of our newer members, Gail Gilbert, has agreed to take on this responsibility for Men’s League matches.
