SHORT MAT COMPETITIONS

SHORT MAT COMPETITIONS: ADDITIONAL RULES FOR SET PLAY

Since almost everyone who entered last year enjoyed the set format, this year's competitions will again use that format, rather than the traditional 15 ends which we use in the leagues. We will still be playing with 4 woods for singles and 2 woods for pairs and all the usual Short Mat rules will still apply, with one exception. However, there are some additional rules for the set format, which you should know before you start play. Before the first set players/teams must toss a coin and the winner will have the choice of taking the mat or giving it to their opponents. The losing team/player will have the choice at the beginning of the second set.

  1. Each match will comprise 2 sets of 7 ends; the winner of a set gains 1 point; a draw will give each player ½ point.
  2. If at any point a player/team cannot win a set, there will be no further play e.g. after 6 ends, one team/player is 5 shots behind and can only score a maximum of 4. The set is over and the 7th end must not be played.
  3. If the jack is driven off the side of the mat, the usual loss of end by 2 shots will not apply. Instead, the jack must be placed back on the mat on the respot nearest to the point where it left the mat. The respot will be the middle of the foot fault line and will be marked with a green sticker. This rule will also apply in the tiebreaker end.
  4. If after 2 sets, teams/players are level on points, they must play a tiebreaker end. They must toss a coin again for choice of taking the mat or giving it away. The winner of this end will be the winner of the match.
