Welcome to the July edition of our waste and recycling e-newsletter.

In this month's email find information on:

  • Myth busting - what really happens to your general waste?!
  • WIN a picnic hamper competition
  • Food waste reduction
  • Bathroom recycling tips
  • Face mask disposal
  • And more!

Are you squeaky clean?

If everyone in the UK recycled one bathroom cleaner bottle, enough energy could be saved to vacuum around 82,460 homes.

Top 10 things everyone can recycle from their bathroom:

  1. Shampoo bottles
  2. Conditioner bottles
  3. Shower gel and bubble bath bottles
  4. Cardboard boxes e.g. toothpaste or soap boxes
  5. Toilet roll tubes
  6. Bathroom cleaner and bleach bottles
  7. Deodorant cans
  8. Shaving foam cans
  9. Hand soap bottles
  10. Moisturiser bottles

Just remember to make sure everything is clean, empty and with lids off before you pop in them in your recycling bin.

*A note of caution – everybody is different! So please use a common-sense approach when using the planner, taking into account nutritional advice and any special diets you may have been prescribed by registered health professionals.

Disposing of face masks

Over 100 million disposable masks are thrown away each week in the UK, with many ending up as litter contaminating our environment and causing a hazard for wildlife.

Disposable face coverings should not be reused so please throw them away in your household general waste bin as they can not be recycled and will end up contaminating other recyclable items.

What's more where possible opt for a reusable face covering that you can wash at home and reuse rather than disposable masks!

Composting

Back in May we ran a compost bin giveaway to celebrate International Compost Week. We received over 1000 competition entries so we just want to give a little thank you shout out to all that entered.

The 50 residents that have won compost bins have now been contacted so congrats to our winners! If you won one don't forget to share a pic on social media of your compost bin in its new home #NottsRecycles.

Did you know?

Over 95% of general waste collected in Nottinghamshire is sent to energy recovery meaning less that 5%* is sent to landfill!

In our most recent survey** nearly 60% of residents thought their general waste just goes to landfill when this really isn't the case. Now you know help spread the word.

*The 5% still being landfilled is generally waste that can’t be recycled or is not suitable for energy recovery.
