PERTH TOUR 2016  Saturday 3rd -Tuesday 6th September inclusive.

On Saturday, 38 of us set off in Sim’s coach, driven by Phil again, for Perth, stopping for breaks at Gretna and Stirling, arriving at Perth Bowling Club ready for our game at 14:00 (many thanks to them for hosting us at such short notice).

A good afternoon was had by all, with good company and hospitality. Our new mascot, Crofty, for Top Rink, was won by Bobby, Alistair, Edna & Trish. Wooden spoons to Tony D, Mike R, Jean & Ann. Well done all.

On then to the Salutation Hotel in Perth where we got settled in nicely before dinner at 19:00. The food in the hotel was excellent and the staff very helpful and friendly, although it was very easy to get lost! And the temperature rose with the elevation. After an evening of ‘various activities’ we managed to navigate (some with difficulty) the corridors to our rooms.

On Sunday, after a good breakfast and a walk round, we made for Almond Valley Bowling Club about 5 miles from Perth. This little club only has 35 members, but has good facilities including floodlights and flood defences, although they have never been flooded! After a hard fought game we actually won, with Crofty going to Myself, Francis & Mike C, spoons to Tom, Bill, Mike R,& Enid, so  a very good afternoon in nice company. Another good dinner followed again by ‘various  activities’ and more navigating of passages.

Monday dawned a bit overcast, and after a look round Perth, it is a nice place, we went to Perth West End Bowling Club where we were again made very welcome, and had a game on their very good green and imbibed in their very good clubhouse. The raffle system was different, if not confusing, but we seemed to come away with a good haul of bottles. Top rink was Brian, Mike C, Edna, Ces & Nora. Spoons to myself, John L, Francis & Val. Another excellent visit. After dinner we were given the use of a room where we were able to entertain ourselves very well. Please have a look at David Taylor's informative DVD for evidence!

On Tuesday, we departed the Salutation and  visited the ‘weeping window’ display of ceramic poppies at the Black Watch museum which was very moving. We then made our way to Bothwell near Hamilton for our last game. A fine display of scarecrows greeted us there (so lifelike) I did notice some of them eating chips! The weather turned to drizzle while we  played, but it didn’t spoil the game. Top rink to Mike C, Tony, Trish & Edna. Spoons to myself (again), Isla, David T, & Susan R.  A nice end was a tasty bowl of soup & a ham sandwich to send us on our way home, arriving back at 20:15.

RESULTS - Croft first: 57 - Perth 123. v Almond Valley 86 - 80. v West End 79 - 107. v Bothwell 70 - 92

Thanks to Tony Sloan and Keith for their Captains duties, they were a great help to me. Thanks to everyone else on the tour who created such a good atmosphere all round, it is nice to see happy faces! Thank you for the signed card & vouchers.

See you next time!

David Alexander.
