TROON TOUR 2015
This year by popular demand we extended the tour to 4 days, so we set off from Main street on Friday 4th September at 8.30am & after a break at Gretna, we headed up to Kilmarnock in Ayrshire for a look around and lunch, quite a nice town with a good street market.
The first game was at Portland Bowling Club which was a very smart club with 2 good greens, surrounds, and a super clubhouse. We were made very welcome and treated to the usual Scottish hospitality, also a good game of bowls.
We arrived at the hotel and were warmly welcomed by Stewart and staff who got us nicely settled in. The hotel was extremely busy, with a wedding in full swing as well as the Live in Troon music festival in progress. The staff coped very well and served us an excellent dinner at 7.30.
Saturday saw us in Ayr for a look around (where I discovered a liking for sugar in coffee! Ayr is a very pleasant old town with nice street furniture and flower displays. On then to Hawkhill Bowling Club where we were treated to tea and sandwiches for lunch, followed again by more hospitality, this time including the Red Arrows and bigger birds! They can’t do enough for you in Scotland!
Sunday saw us having a morning in Troon itself, a very pleasant town with lovely beaches, walks and open spaces with bonny flower beds &displays. On then to Dundonald Bowling Club for an interesting afternoon, (more hospitality after only 2 ends). Another very friendly club in nice surroundings, overlooked by Dundonald Castle.
Monday, last day already! after another filling breakfast we said our goodbyes to South Beach Hotel and headed for Dumfries.
I pause a moment to pay tribute to everyone at South Beach for making us so welcome, the staff, management and hotel itself left nothing to be desired.
At Dumfries, after a look round the town, we headed to Maxwelltown Bowling Club where again we were well received and fed after a very good game. We departed Dumfries around 6.00pm, arriving back home at 8.00pm.
Apart from light rain on Friday the weather was very good, I will conclude by saying thank you to everyone for helping to make it a memorable weekend, also for the kind donation.
P.S. While the scores look poor, remember that we were up against county &international players, also our members were competing for the coveted wooden spoons! Anyway scores don’t matter on tour.
Results. Croft first.
v Portland Kilmarnock.83-114
v Hawkhill Ayr 61-80
vDundonald 76-128

I hope to see you all on the next tour,(any suggestions?)
David Alexander.
