The George Henry Hawkins Trust: Supporting the Community of East Stoke Since 1959

The George Henry Hawkins Trust has been a quiet but meaningful presence in the Parish of East Stoke for over six decades, providing support and seasonal gifts to both young and older members of the community.

The Trust was established in August 1959 following the death of Minnie Hawkins. In her memory, and in recognition of the Hawkins family’s connection to the parish, the Trust was created with a clear and enduring purpose: to benefit the children and senior residents of East Stoke.

In its early years, the Trust focused on meeting both practical needs and providing simple pleasures. Children in the parish were treated to shared experiences, such as a summer outing or a visit to a winter pantomime—events that not only entertained but also brought families together and created lasting memories. At the same time, senior residents received a bag of coal, a thoughtful and valuable gift at a time when many households relied on solid fuel for heating during the colder months.

As the decades passed, the Trust evolved in response to changing times and needs, while remaining faithful to its original aims. The emphasis gradually shifted from essential provisions to gifts that enhance enjoyment and wellbeing.

Today, the Trust continues to support the younger generation with seasonal treats. At Easter, children may receive Easter eggs or cinema vouchers, while at Christmas they are given chocolate selection boxes—small gestures that contribute to the excitement and celebration of these special times of year.

Senior residents are also remembered with care and consideration. Rather than coal, they now receive a choice of gifts that reflect modern preferences and lifestyles. These may include vouchers for local businesses such as Holme Nursery or the Rex Cinema, as well as food hampers or a bottle of spirits at Christmas. These offerings not only provide practical value but also encourage connection with local amenities and a sense of inclusion within the community.

Throughout its history, the George Henry Hawkins Trust has remained true to its founding principle: supporting the people of East Stoke in ways that are both meaningful and appropriate to the times. Though the nature of the gifts has changed, the spirit behind them—a commitment to care, community, and continuity—remains unchanged.

In an age where much changes rapidly, the Trust stands as a reminder of the enduring importance of local generosity and community-focused giving. Its work continues to bring quiet moments of joy and support to residents young and old, ensuring that the legacy of Minnie Hawkins lives on in the heart of East Stoke.
