Presentation Evening at North End Bowls Club
The presentation evening was held on Sunday 4th November at the North End Bowls Club in Beresford Road. The President, Roger Wood arrived early to greet members when they turned up. Once everyone was in place, Roger asked his guest, Min Wright, if she would present the trophies, to which she agreed.
Once the presentation was over, everyone was offered a drink of their choice, given by the past President, Peter King. Cheers Peter. Peter was supposed to be with us tonight, but for some reason has not appeared, hope all is well.
Roger announced that there would then be a quiz, 100 questions done in blocks of 25, with two rounds being run before our ploughman’s lunch being ready for 9pm. The teams were made up of Bill, Maisie, Peter H and Cathy (Viva Las Vegas), Steve, Rachel, Rhys and Lillie (We Know Nothing), Pete N, Dave, Ivor and Maurice (Four Just Men), Steven, Carole, Shelagh and Min (Runners Up), Trevor M, Wendy, Colin and Maggie (Troggie) and finally, John, Hilda, Malcolm and Bridget (Incredible Four).
The quiz started and in the first round, the six teams scored between 10 and 15. In the next round there was some laughter when Roger got tied up on a question and ended up doing a ‘Bradley Walsh’, he was laughing so much, he was crying. Anyway, somehow after this question, Ivor ended up with the name ‘ping-ping’, which hopefully we can keep going throughout the coming season. The top two teams and the bottom two teams jockied for position on points.
The ploughman’s was served, with home-made chutney and coleslaw. There was plenty of cheese, with some extra varieties for those who wanted. The crusty bread was just right and plenty of it. Chris, who had prepared the food, kept on coming round to make sure that if there was any more bread wanted to let her know as there was plenty left. If anyone also wanted to take any of the food away with them, again let her know and she would provide some cling film. Altogether it was a great spread, thank you for what you did for us.
After the food, we continued with the quiz and the third round was much like the previous scores ranging between 11 and 19 points. The final round which according to Roger was going to be the easiest, threw up the worst scores of all, with the highest score being 12. After a lot of fun and frivolity, especially for ping-ping, the results were announced and as is the custom they were announced in reverse order, coming last was: (6) We Know Nothing with 39 points, (5) Incredible Four with 42 points, (4) Viva Las Vegas with 52 points, (3) Runners Up with 54 points, (2) Troggie with 58 points and (1) Four Just Men with 61 points.
Peter H thanked Roger for arranging the venue and the food as well as the quiz with everyone agreeing that it had been a great evening. Ivor said that he has been a member of lots of bowls clubs, but Eastney is not like other clubs, we are like family. We have a good time whether on the rink or at functions such as this and long may it continue.
Roger thanked everyone for coming and making the evening a success. He also wanted to thank Shane and Chris, the stewards for serving the drinks and providing the food and hoped that we could support the North End Club in the future as well as hold other evenings there.
