Welcome to the website of Exbourne Local History Group!

Exbourne is a small village in the heart of the West Devon countryside, close to Dartmoor National Park and the towns of Hatherleigh and Okehampton.

Our small but thriving Local History Group, holds meetings on the third Tuesday of the month, except August. Meetings take place at 7.30pm, in Exbourne Village Hall - although timings and dates may occasionally vary.

The aim of the group is to learn more about of the history of the people, buildings, businesses, pastimes and traditions of the village of Exbourne and also about the surrounding area and to share this information through meetings, publications, exhibitions, our website and photographic archive.

There is a programme of guest speakers, for meetings throughout the year.
Each talk lasts about an hour including questions, followed by light refreshments and a chance for informal discussion. There is usually a historical visit planned for May and in December there is an annual members' dinner.

Alongside these activities there is a small group of skilled and dedicated researchers, who have spent a great deal of time and effort finding out more about the history of Exbourne. Some of their findings appear in our two Publications but the Group holds a great deal of information which was not included but which it will gradually detail on this website. Since the Group was formed there have also been five exhibition days, which enabled members to share our research work with the whole community.

On this website you will find details of all our past Meetings and Activities, as well as reports on special activities and exhibitions.

Membership is by Annual Subscription. Currently this is £15 and includes tea or coffee and biscuits at each meeting. Visitors are very welcome, however we make a small charge for this of £3.

Full details of the current year's dates and activities appear on the Programme for 2023/24
