Our Volunteers

As would be expected, our volunteers need to be signed off before they can be allocated a client. This standard practice ensures that clients are reassured of the suitability of their befriender. Once you have completed the necessary checks and been accepted into the scheme, you will be covered by the Good Neighbour Network's insurance policy.

As we are all individuals, we need to match clients and befrienders carefully so that we can aim for some commonality in the relationship. Our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to discuss suitable location, the level of commitment you wish to offer, etc. This information will be used to identify a client for you. Generally we would aim to introduce you to your client in the first instance and monitor the situation to ensure that a suitable match is made.

Our volunteers do not provide personal care, shopping, gardening, cleaning nor transport but are there to be a friendly contact with our clients. Each volunteer is assigned to one (or two) people and, unless circumstances change, they stay with that person.

A few of our volunteers take their client out for social outings, such as shopping or to a garden centre for coffee. This very much depends on their own circumstances and the abilities of their client.

Our volunteers find it a very rewarding experience.
