Urgent request for foodbank donations.
Farnsfield Parish Council
This is an urgent request for foodbank donations. Please help if you can.
Community Action Response (CAR) in Ollerton receive and manage all the contributions we receive and take up each Monday. It was formed at the beginning of lockdown in March and has grown in only 6 months, because of the great need, to a fully-fledged support hub. They are currently sending out at least 20 hampers a day. A hamper is a week’s supply of food for the household. They have also been giving financial and emotional support to people in need.
The first thing to say is that everyone really appreciates what is being done by the community in Farnsfield and other areas.
Without the support of people like our own team there would be almost no support for those in need.
To summarise, CAR is dealing with increasing numbers needing help. They are worried about being able to help all those who need help because donations are dropping now. There is concern about having enough support at Half Term when demand will increase. The main things which are needed are the basics which can be cooked quickly and easily
• Tinned produce with a long life - Meats, pies, prepared curries, tinned fish, tinned vegetables, baked beans and tomatoes, tinned fruit and puddings
• Long life complete “microwave” meals
• Dried goods such as pasta and rice
• Breakfast cereals
• Biscuits and crisps are a nice luxury!
• Personal hygiene items plus shampoos etc.
• Fresh items are great also and always appreciated, but it is the long-life items which are most easily handled and distributed.
Donations can be left in the church porch or over the counter in the Co-op. Please contact Paul Mortimer on 07970 059618 if you would like information about making cash donations.
This is a recent update from CAR:-
“The work of CAR continues unabated.
We are witnessing first-hand how the lockdown triggered an unprecedented rise in the demand for food as the economy was hit and household incomes plunged. The words of Daphine Aikens (a foodbank founder) came home sharply: “Most people are only a payday away from a crisis.” Therefore, our project (CAR) is aimed at those who are in crisis due to COVID-19. A COVID crisis can involve any of the following:
1. Job loss or redundancy;
2. Benefit delays;
3. Shielding or isolating;
4. Illness due to COVID;
5. Families who are disadvantaged;
6. Individuals/families fleeing domestic violence;
7. Deteriorating mental health due to isolation.
In response, the project has delivered 1398 hampers of food across Nottinghamshire. We have provided telephone support to 649 people and mental health packs and activity packs to children. Each hamper contains enough food to last one week or enough food for each individual for 21 meals. We have helped 1861 adults and 1709 children so we calculate that we have provided 74,970 meals.
At the height of the lockdown, 70 volunteers were actively involved. Some of those have now gone back to work, but we are very grateful for every act of kindness.
Many thanks to all who have helped and are helping so amazingly. Keep up the great work.”
If anyone needs direct help (Farnsfield residents are eligible) they can call the CAR team on 07754 536530.
They will talk through what is needed and help out with a delivery. Everything is 100% confidential.
This week’s collection consisted of loads of fresh produce – thanks go to the Methodist Church for their Harvest Festival contributions. We had one large sack of bread from Atherleys, 4 hampers from the Veg Stop and about 20 bags in total.
Let us hope that we in Farnsfield can continue to give them the support they need to continue.
