Public Electric Vehicle charging infrastructure in Leicestershire

The County Council are committed to the roll out of public EV chargepoints, which will:

  • support residents, businesses, and visitors in the switch to electric vehicles
  • help the authority decarbonise transport and meet our net zero ambitions.

This is a new and very challenging area for local authorities, with very little consensus nationally on how to:

  • provide the necessary EV charging infrastructure in a coordinated way
  • deal with growing EV demand, particularly for those without access to off-street parking.

Last year saw the County Council successfully bid for government funding to deliver an initial 100 public chargepoints across all seven districts through the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) pilot.

The Council is also working proactively with Midlands Connect and a number of other local authorities to bid for further LEVI funding which would bring additional public EV chargepoints to Leicestershire, to help meet the needs of the growing EV market. The locations of these chargepoints have not yet been identified and the council will now look to gather information about charging requirements in the county and develop a suitable delivery plan.

EV Countywide survey and Interactive Chargepoint Map

To this end, the county council are pleased to announce the launch of an EV consultation survey and Interactive Chargepoint Map: leicestershire.gov.uk/electric-vehicle-chargepoints

The consultation will run until 30th November 2023 and will provide an opportunity for current and future EV owners to tell us about their charging habits or potential charging concerns and help us shape where public EV chargepoints are located in Leicestershire.

Feedback from the survey and interactive map will provide the authority with a better understanding of the demand for on-street chargepoints and charging requirements and help us to plan a network of chargepoints that works for our communities. We encourage all parish councils to complete the survey and suggest potential locations on the interactive map where you would like to see a chargepoint.

In addition, it would be helpful if you could let your community know about the survey and encourage them to complete it.
