Sidmouth Folk Festival and The Friends of Sidholme Music Room Presents

A celebration of art & folk song from the British Isles and beyond with songs demonstrating how folk music has influenced and been part of Christian worship across the ages. A special "Folklassical" celebration where the art song repertoire acknowledges its tradional roots within and outside of the sphere of Chrisitan worship. Performed by acclaimed Mezzo Soprano Lorraine Low and Julian Williams (Piano).

A unique way to start this years folk festival for those local to Sidmouth or those early arrivers to the festival itself.

Lorraine studied  music at  Oxford  where she majored in vocal studies specialising in the performance of art song. After graduating she continued her vocal studies in London and performed regularly in recitals and as a soloist with several choral societies. She has performed  with regional opera companies. Roles  included  Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), Annio (La Clemenza di Tito) and Suzuki (Madama Butterfly) .

She has studied with various internationally acclaimed  singers/tutors including Pamela Bowden, Marjorie Thomas and Sophie Daneman and  is currently a student of the Australian Mezzo Soprano Caitlin Hulcup.

Since moving to Sidmouth in 2016 she has pefromed in a number of solo recitals and charity concerts locally. She has also participated in the Oxford Lieder festival masterclass series.

Julian was a member of the National Youth Orchestra 1983
He performed numerous university and college concerts in Cambridge 1984-88, before graduating in music.
He has cccompanied, at different times, Taunton Choral Society and Llandovery Male Voice Choir.

Following ordination Julian undertook a lot of playing in churches and schools, and is now increasingly in demand locally for charity fundraising concerts, as soloist and accompanist.

Julian has given several chamber recitals from 2012 to the present with Speranza, a part-professional ensemble.
Julian sees performing as sharing the joy and the beauty of the music and giving some added brightness and warmth to people's lives. He is classically trained to a high standard but also enjoys the chance to do some jazz, ragtime, etc.

Julian is described as a bit of a dreamy romantic who loves to just sit at the piano and improvise. He has performed  to very positive responses; "full of life, movingly played," "very atmospheric," "a magical recital".

This special collaborative concert is being staged to mark the mutual appreciation of the partnership Sidholme Hotel and The Sidmouth Folk Festival have established in recent years.
