Two pianos at Sidholme Music Room

On November 5th, in the beautiful Sidholme Music Room, a capacity audience was treated to ‘pyrotechnics’ and an ‘explosive’ musical feast. A second piano had been brought from the Methodist Church especially for the occasion.

Not only do Andrew Millington and David Davis both play the piano with exceptional skill and musicality, but they have both worked as organists at Exeter Cathedral, so it was also a rare chance to hear the renovated organ played to its technical limits.

The programme was varied and entertaining, with a mixture of duets and solo pieces, using all three instruments. It kicked off appropriately with Music for the Royal Fireworks by Handel.

An organ duet by Samuel Wesley amused the audience as the two performers had physical contortions, both playing at one instrument. But the sweet tone and intricate 4 handed playing showed the organ at its best.

The piano duet by Rachmaninov, rarely heard, was a highlight with the two pianos playing together in stereophonic effect. The technical skill and brilliance in the tarantella was breath-taking.

Saint Saens’ ‘Swan’, normally heard on ‘cello was lyrical and moving, while the jazz pieces from America, including Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’ got our feet tapping. A rollicking rendering of the William Tell Overture, and a Jamaican Rumba by Arthur Benjamin left the audience cheering for more.

This was a real musical treat, a ticketed event. The programme of concerts continues on Nov 28th with piano players old and young, enjoying the newly purchased Yamaha concert grand. All retiring collections go towards the renovation of the chandeliers.
