Great Lumley Bowls Club
WELCOME TO GREAT LUMLEY BOWLING CLUB
We opened in 1984 and the greens have been in constant use from April to September, five days a week for 30+ years.
Membership has naturally varied year to year, but at the present time (2017) it stands at 17 male and 8 female members, in addition to occasional players. We are, as you'll see, a small club, which means we have had to reduce the number of Leagues we play in; currently only two - The North West Durham League, and the Pelton Fell Vets League. We also get together to play Jumbles on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons throughout the season - weather permitting.
We play on greens owned by the Parish Council, and make a contribution to the cost of maintaining them. For 30 years we have enjoyed, courtesy of the Parish Council, the free use of space within the Sports Pavilion, which is part of the village Community Centre building. However, as management of the whole building is being transferred very soon by the Council to the Community Association, our use of those premises has changed. We are now operating out of an adjoining large garage space, which actually provides a brighter, roomier and more welcoming area than the original pavilion!
However, despite everything, our aim continues to be to encourage greater participation by local residents of all ages and physical abilities to try our sport and join in the club activities whenever possible. We can only invite adults, though, as we do not have a junior section.
We offer prospective members up to 3 bowling sessions (paying just £1 green fee each session) with FREE use of equipment, and no initial costly outlay. All we ask is that, thereafter, if you want to continue playing at Great Lumley you pay either the Annual Membership fee of £25 OR a £10 subscription fee and £1 each time you play. The choice is yours.
