Grinshill Quarries
Located near to Grinshill Village, the Grinshill Quarries are a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as designated by Natural England.
Lying within the boundary of Corbett Wood, which is owned by Shropshire Council having been gifted by the Acton Reynald Estate and managed by the Shropshire Great Outdoors team.
The area has been quarried extensively, principally for the pale Grinshill Sandstone, which was used for Lord Hill’s Column (1814-1816), Haughmond Abbey, Shrewsbury railway station, the Welsh Bridge and many local buildings and bridges in the Shrewsbury area. The stone is valued for its colour, durability, strength and consistency.
There remains one active quarrying site which continues to supply Grinshill stone, but the remainder of the sites form part of the rich and diverse industrial and increasingly natural heritage.
Further details of the SSSI background can be found in the documents attached below.
