Autumn 2023 Update
Hamble Conservation Volunteers
With the wildlife breeding season over for this year we have been able to be more active on Hamble Common. While the cattle have been providing sterling support with their grazing they will be removed soon as there is little nourishment growing now and in any case they do not appear to like gorse and this is where we come in. Without human intervention the gorse would dominate and become a mono culture and historic techniques of controlling growth such as fire are not popular these days for obvious reasons. Eastleigh Borough Council are tasked with maintaining the Common and we are fully committed helping them with a programme of cutting back the gorse. We have made great progress so far but there is still much to do and if anyone can spare the time your help would be much appreciated.
In parallel we have also been assisting Hamble Parish Council staff with their efforts to uphold the appearance of the waterfront through a programme of planting, weeding and maintenance of public seating. We are also helping them with the upkeep of Hamble Church grounds and cemetery which, owing to the fragility of many of the gravestones, precludes the use of powercutters in close proximity to the stonework.
Inevitably our litter collecting efforts continue unabated as it would appear that a certain section of our society cannot curb their habit of leaving debris behind when they leave Hamble.
Incidentally until further notice we are unable to use the School Lane car park and when this is shown as the meeting place on notice boards please join us at Hamble Point car park.
