BOWLS BIG BASH took off again last Monday, a departure from the usual format of lawn green bowls which caused initial confusion and remarks such as “what has Fred got us into now” and “if you were a member of MENSA, you would still struggle with these rules”. Once explained, the format is easy to set up and the game progressed at a pace. Some of the ladies found because they could choose where to put the mat they could get to their comfortable ‘length’ and started to dictate play.

Peter Walker and Keith Fox leapt on the chance to increase their ’street cred’ by wearing the flamboyant T shirts and after a few ends everyone was into the game and the not so latent competitive streak kicked in and a fierce battle ensued with Tom Coppard and Peter Walker claiming top rink.

We all made it just before the drizzle set in. The verdict was that BIG BASH is fun, a good ‘drawing game’, but would not replace the usual bowls format. A couple of members who were spectators said they would like to give it a try, and why not!
