HantsAbility was formed in 2010, inspired by the story of a great friend of ours, Lexi.
Today, Lexi is a bright, cheerful three-year old with spina bifida. Her health is stable at the moment but she has a bladder procedure every six months as well as daily medication. Lexi’s neuropathic bladder and bowel provide ongoing problems.
The charity helped to match-fund the cost of equipment for Lexi. Mum Elizabeth comments: “HantsAbility’s money has helped us to afford things to make her more comfortable and little things like the right car seat and mattress make a big difference to her comfort. HantsAbility is a good source of for families in similar situations.”
Another local we have helped is Caroline, who suffered a dreadful riding accident.
Caroline has been passionate about horses since childhood. She had a horse named Sparkle, competed in competitions, and went all the way to Australia. It was there in 1999 that she had the riding accident which left her with a brain injury and took away her ability to walk.
It has been Caroline’s dream to get back on her feet and start walking again, so after a surprisingly optimistic assessment Caroline started visiting Physability in Gloucestershire where she began to use a walking frame.
Caroline made great progress and needed to buy a frame so she could continue doing exercises at home. In order to afford this frame Caroline applied to HantsAbility and we worked with another charity to enable Caroline to match-fund this equipment.
Having the funding from HantsAbility has allowed Caroline to continue making important progress at home. Caroline is now confident in herself and feels that her life is changing.
