History on Foot Walks
Lawley & Overdale History Group
During the summer from June 1st to August 31st, Wrekin Local Studies Forum have arranged a programme of guided local history walks across Telford and East Shropshire organised by members of the WLSF. For more information and pre-booking to ensure your place please contact the organiser of the individual walks. Groups may invite small donations to offset any costs. Discover amazing stories and places so close to home! Be sure to arrive early to allow all walks to depart on time.
Lawley and Overdale Local History Group have 3 walks on offer -
Lawley and Newdale - 12.00 noon - on Saturday 16th June. Start - Outside Morrisons, Lawley Square. - Exploring the footprint of the former working village founded by Abraham Darby II, then crossing the Grade 2 listed tram bridge and along the former Severn Junction railway line to Rock Village and the Methodist Chapel. Note: a slight incline upwards for part of the route.
Shortwood and Steeraway - 11.00 am - on Saturday 16th July - Start - from New Works Lane car park. - Viewing the UK Coal old site, Steeraway Shortwood Colliery, Steeraway Horse Level (those who wish) pick marks, drill holes etc. Continue to Steeraway to the lime kilns to see the flatbed tram, well and tunnel (adit). Then via Limekiln Lane through Shortwood viewing No 9 & No 10 working areas. Note: Strong walking shoes, walking stick, torches.
Telford, Cadman and Cinderloo - 1.00pm on Saturday 11th August - from Dawley Baptist Church, Dawley Bank.- A circular walk including Malinslee Church (Thomas Telford), Old Park:
brickworks (Botfields) touching on the Cinderloo Riot of 1821 and Revd Samuel Parkes Cadman with a final stop around Dawley Bank.
