Lunedale is a very rural parish situated in the  South West of County Durham bordering Cumbria. The reservoirs of Grassholme and Selset fill much of the valley floor but provide fishing for many keen anglers. Agriculture is the main 'industry' in the form of hill farming, predominantly Swaledale  sheep and beef cattle.

The renowned Wemmergill shooting  estate  which has played host to many Royals makes up much of the area to the west of the parish.
